Cause analysis of PAM solution whitening

Generally speaking, polyacrylamide solution should be colorless transparent gel. But some customers asked Gongyi Filter Industry Co.,Ltd, polyacrylamide solution sometimes turns white, what is the reason for this phenomenon? Generally, the whiteness of polyacrylamide solution means that the viscosity of solution decreases. The viscosity reduction can not be separated from the following reasons:

1. Storage time: the viscosity of PAM solution will degrade with the increase of storage time, and the flocculation effect will be worse. Generally speaking, Anionic PAM solution can be stored for seven days, while Cationic PAM solution can be stored for 24 hours. This is mainly due to the hydrolysis of amide group and the increase of hydroxyl content. In particular, the effect of cationic group is more obvious. The amide group is removed from NH3 to form imide group, which is caused by the increase of molecular chain rigidity.

2. Mechanical effect: agitation can improve the dissolution rate of PAM dry powder, but high speed agitation will also shorten the molecular chain of PAM. Therefore, it is recommended that the agitation speed of PAM solution should not exceed 60 rpm, and high-strength agitation equipment and high-speed conveying equipment should not be used.

3. Temperature effect: when the temperature of 0.1% PAM solution reaches 80 ℃ - 90 ℃, the molecular weight of 18 million will degrade to about 5 million after 2-4 hours. With the increase of temperature, the degradation will be faster, and the performance of polyacrylamide is the most stable at 25 ℃.

4. The influence of light: the temperature of PAM solution is increased by light, which causes the degradation of PAM solution. The direct irradiation of ultraviolet light also causes the rapid degradation of PAM solution.

5. Influence of impurities: neutral water should be used to dissolve PAM dry powder. High hardness of water or impurities will affect the viscosity and application effect of PAM.
